BMI Calculator UAE: What It Measures
BMI, or body mass index, is a simple measurement based on a person's weight and height. It is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared.
Our BMI calculator uses your weight in kilograms and height in centimetres and converts the height to metres automatically.
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m) × Height (m)]
BMI is commonly used as a screening measure for adult weight classification. It does not directly measure body fat and should not be treated as a diagnosis.
How to Use This BMI Calculator
Using the calculator is straightforward:
- Enter your weight in kilograms (kg).
- Enter your height in centimetres (cm) without shoes.
- Select Calculate BMI.
- The calculator shows your BMI and the corresponding WHO adult classification.
You can change either measurement and calculate again to compare results.
The calculator is designed for adults aged 18 and over. Children and teenagers should not use adult BMI bands because their BMI is interpreted using age- and sex-specific growth references.
How BMI Is Calculated
The standard BMI formula is:
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)
Because this calculator asks for height in centimetres, it converts the value into metres before performing the calculation.
For example, a height of 175 cm is 1.75 m.
For a person weighing 70 kg:
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.857...
The calculator displays this as 22.9. The classification is selected using the underlying, unrounded BMI value rather than the rounded display value.
Example: 70 kg and 175 cm
Suppose you enter:
| Measurement | Value |
|---|---|
| Weight | 70 kg |
| Height | 175 cm |
| Height in metres | 1.75 m |
| BMI | 22.9 |
| WHO classification | Normal |
This example demonstrates why entering accurate weight and height is important. A small change in either measurement can change the calculated BMI.
WHO Adult BMI Classification
The standard adult BMI bands used by this calculator are:
| BMI | Classification |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to 24.9 | Normal |
| 25.0 to 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 or above | Obesity |
WHO defines adult overweight at a BMI of 25 or above and obesity at a BMI of 30 or above.
These categories are intended for adult screening and classification. They should not be applied to children and adolescents in the same way.
BMI Calculator for Women and Men
Searches such as BMI calculator women, BMI calculator men, female BMI calculator, BMI calculator female and BMI calculator male all refer to the same basic adult height-and-weight calculation used here.
This calculator uses the standard adult BMI formula for both men and women. It does not apply a separate male or female BMI formula.
BMI alone also does not account for differences in muscle mass, body composition or fat distribution. WHO describes BMI as a useful measure for classifying adult overweight and obesity, but additional measurements can provide more information about body fat and health risk.
BMI Calculator in kg and cm
The calculator accepts:
Weight: kilograms (kg)
Height: centimetres (cm)
This avoids common unit-entry mistakes.
For example:
- 5'3" is approximately 160 cm
- 5'6" is approximately 168 cm
- 5'9" is approximately 175 cm
- 6'0" is approximately 183 cm
When entering height, use your measurement without shoes.
If your weight is given in pounds, convert it to kilograms before entering it. Likewise, convert feet and inches to centimetres before entering height.
What Does Your BMI Result Mean?
A BMI result provides a general adult classification based on your height and weight.
A result below 18.5 falls in the underweight band. A result from 18.5 to 24.9 falls in the normal band. A result from 25.0 to 29.9 falls in the overweight band, while 30.0 or above falls in the obesity band.
The result should be considered in context. BMI cannot distinguish between muscle and fat and does not show where body fat is distributed. WHO notes that additional measures, such as waist circumference, can help provide further information when assessing obesity.
BMI Calculator for Kids and Teenagers
This page is an adult BMI calculator.
Do not use these adult BMI bands to assess children or teenagers. For people aged 5–19, WHO uses BMI-for-age references that take age and sex into account.
Parents looking for a BMI calculator for kids should therefore use an appropriate paediatric BMI-for-age assessment rather than applying the adult thresholds shown on this page.
BMI vs Body Fat Calculator
BMI and body-fat percentage are not the same measurement.
BMI is calculated from weight and height. It does not directly measure how much of a person's weight comes from body fat.
A body fat calculator or measurement method attempts to estimate body-fat percentage using different inputs or techniques. BMI can therefore be useful as a screening measure while still being an incomplete picture of body composition.
BMI vs Calories Calculator
A BMI calculator and a calories calculator answer different questions.
BMI uses height and weight to produce an adult weight-classification measure.
A calorie calculator estimates energy requirements using factors such as age, sex, height, weight and activity level, depending on the method used.
Your BMI result should therefore not be interpreted as a calorie target or daily calorie requirement.
Does Age Affect BMI?
BMI is interpreted differently for adults and children.
This calculator is intended for adults aged 18 and over. Adult BMI uses the standard height-and-weight calculation, while children and teenagers require age- and sex-specific interpretation.
An age calculator and a BMI calculator serve different purposes, so an age result should not be substituted for the age-specific growth assessment used for children.
Is BMI the Same in the UAE?
The BMI calculation itself does not change because you are in the UAE.
The same basic formula is:
BMI = weight in kg ÷ height in metres²
The UAE-specific purpose of this page is to provide an easy calculator using commonly understood metric inputs and a clear adult classification reference.
Important Limitations of BMI
BMI is useful as a screening measure, but it has limitations.
It does not:
- directly measure body fat;
- distinguish muscle mass from fat mass;
- describe where fat is stored;
- provide a medical diagnosis;
- replace an assessment by a qualified healthcare professional.
People with the same BMI can have different amounts of body fat and different health profiles. BMI should therefore be interpreted alongside other relevant health information where appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is BMI?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is calculated using weight in kilograms and height in metres squared and is commonly used to classify adult underweight, overweight and obesity.
What units should I use?
Enter weight in kilograms and height in centimetres. For example, 1.75 metres should be entered as 175 cm.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m)
Which BMI classifications does this calculator show?
It shows Underweight below 18.5, Normal from 18.5 to below 25, Overweight from 25 to below 30, and Obese at 30 or above. Classification uses the unrounded BMI.
